Electrolysis Aftercare: What to Do Before and After Your Session

Electrolysis aftercare is actually very simple, but it is also really important, and the reason why is worth understanding rather than just following a list.

Why Aftercare Matters at All

During your treatment, a probe is inserted into each hair follicle. Because of this, the pores are slightly enlarged afterward.

Enlarged pores make it easier for oil, dirt, and bacteria to get inside and clog them, which can lead to breakouts, especially if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

That is the entire risk. Everything in this guide exists to address that one thing: keeping open pores clean until they close.

Before Your Appointment

Arrive with clean skin. Since a probe is going into the pore, you want to avoid excess bacteria, dirt, or product buildup that could be pushed into the skin. Regardless of how clean you arrive, your technician will thoroughly cleanse the treatment area with alcohol before starting.

That is essentially the only rule. Aside from clean skin, there are no major restrictions before electrolysis. You can continue using your normal skincare products, including actives like Retin-A: they do not impact the effectiveness of electrolysis. This is a real difference from laser, where Retin-A on facial areas needs to be paused for at least 3 days.

Do not wax, tweeze, pluck, or sugar beforehand. This is not a skin-safety rule, it is a treatment-effectiveness rule: if the hair has been pulled from the follicle, I cannot see which pores contain hair, and I have nothing to treat. Shave or trim instead, but leave enough length that I can grasp the hair with tweezers after treatment.

Immediately After Your Session

Aloe vera goes on right away. I always apply aloe vera to my clients after an electrolysis session. Aloe vera contains Vitamin E, which soothes the skin and creates a protective barrier over the enlarged pores, helping prevent pathogens from entering and causing acne or blackheads.

For the rest of the day:

  • Avoid touching the treated area
  • Keep the skin clean
  • Stay away from heavy oil-based skincare products

If you need to wear makeup or do anything that exposes the area to dirt and bacteria, rinse the skin with cool water first to help shrink the pores.

That is genuinely the whole routine. There is no complicated electrolysis aftercare protocol. Keep the area clean, and avoid clogging the pore.

Reactions You Might See, and What They Mean

Hives (small raised swelling). This means the skin may not be tolerating either the probe or the current setting. Hives usually settle within a few minutes to an hour after treatment at most.

If this happens repeatedly, there are two things to look at. First, metal sensitivity, a useful question is whether you can wear costume jewelry without irritation. If not, a gold probe coated in 14-karat gold can prevent the reaction, available as a small add-on. Second, the setting itself. We can lower it, though not too far, because dropping the setting too low compromises your results. Thick hairs need a certain level of energy to be effectively destroyed, so the goal is a comfortable middle ground that protects both your skin and your progress.

Scabs. If scabs form, it is usually because the setting was too high and the skin is reacting, or because the probe was held too flat, if the probe shaft touches the skin during treatment, it can create scabs that look like small lines rather than dots. Either way, they heal normally as part of your skin's ordinary shedding process, and they do not scar.

Acne or blackheads. This traces directly back to those enlarged pores. Dirt, bacteria, and oil have an easier route in. The prevention is the routine above: arrive clean, let your technician wipe the area well, wear the aloe vera afterward, and skip the heavy oils for the day.

What You Can Do Between Sessions

Shave or trim. These are the only hair removal methods you should use between electrolysis appointments. They leave the follicle intact while allowing the hair to regrow naturally, so it is easy to identify and treat at your next session.

Do not wax, tweeze, pluck, or sugar. These remove the entire hair from the follicle, which regresses your progress and interrupts the natural growth cycle.

Keep your normal skincare. Retin-A, vitamin C, retinols, acids, all fine with electrolysis.

A Note for Acne-Prone and Oily Skin

If you already break out easily, be a little more deliberate about the day-of routine. Come in with genuinely clean skin, not just skin that looks clean. Skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can. Use the aloe. And if you do see small breakouts in the treated area afterward, that is a pore-clogging issue rather than a sign that something went wrong with the treatment.

If it keeps happening, mention it: we can adjust the pre-treatment cleansing and talk through your product routine.
