What Is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair removal that uses a tiny probe inserted into each individual hair follicle to destroy the hair growth follicle using electrical energy.
It is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, meaning it is designed to stop hair from growing back over time, not reduce it, not thin it out, but permanently remove it.
That single distinction is the reason clients across Brooklyn seek out electrolysis after years of shaving, waxing, threading, and laser touch-ups. Once a follicle is properly destroyed, that hair will never grow back under any circumstance.
How Electrolysis Is Different From Laser
Unlike laser hair removal, which targets pigment in the hair, electrolysis works on the actual follicle itself.
This is a bigger deal than it sounds. Because laser needs pigment to find its target, it struggles with (and often cannot treat at all) blonde, gray, red, and white hairs. Electrolysis has no such limitation. It is effective for all hair types and all skin tones, including the hairs that lasers cannot always treat.
If you have ever been told you are "not a candidate" for laser because of your hair color, electrolysis is the answer to that problem.
What Type of Electrolysis Do We Use?
We use Blend Electrolysis, which combines both Galvanic and Thermolysis into one treatment.
Most modern electrolysis machines offer Blend because it is effective on every hair type: thick, thin, white, gray, blonde, red, and dark hairs alike.
Although today's machines are far more advanced, the basic science behind electrolysis has remained the same since the 1800s. A tiny electrical current is delivered into the hair follicle to permanently destroy it. The technology has been refined for well over a century; the principle has not needed to change.
What a Session Actually Looks Like
Each hair is treated individually. That is the trade-off at the heart of electrolysis: it is permanent, but it is not fast.
Because every hair gets its own insertion, sessions take time, and very large areas are generally not practical to treat with electrolysis alone. This is exactly why so many clients combine laser and electrolysis: laser handles the volume, electrolysis finishes the job.
For the appointment itself: your technician cleanses the area thoroughly with alcohol, inserts a fine probe into each follicle, delivers the current, and gently removes the treated hair with tweezers. Aloe vera is applied afterward to soothe and protect the skin.
How Long Until You See Permanent Results?
Electrolysis takes about 1–2 years to achieve permanent results, but only if you are consistent based on your hair growth cycle.
That qualifier is the whole game. Your hair can be permanently removed in that window, but the schedule has to follow your hair, not your calendar.
If your hairs grow back every two weeks, that is when you need to come in. If you come in every month instead, it can take 2–3 years, because the longer you wait for your hairs to grow, the stronger and more resistant they become to the electrical current. The smaller the hairs are, the more receptive they are to electrolysis.
Here is a real example from our Brooklyn studio. If a client comes in for 30 minutes once a month, I will often ask them to come for 15 minutes every two weeks instead. They are not spending a dollar more. They are simply being more consistent, and that is what gets them results faster.
Why You Need Multiple Sessions
Two reasons, and they compound.
First, hair grows in cycles. Not every follicle is producing a visible hair at the same time. Since we can only treat the hairs that are actually present and visible, catching every follicle requires many sessions spread across the growth cycle.
Second, follicles are resilient. A common question is whether electrolysis or laser can kill a hair after just one treatment. The simple answer is no. Even after being treated, a follicle can repair itself and continue producing hair. Each treatment weakens it a little more until it can no longer produce a new hair.
This is true of both laser and electrolysis. Anyone promising permanent results in one session is not describing how hair biology works.
Is Electrolysis Safe?
Yes, and it has the longest track record of any hair removal method available.
Can it cause permanent damage or scarring? Absolutely not. The probe only goes deep enough to reach and destroy the hair follicle. It is not large enough or deep enough to cause permanent damage to the skin. Your skin naturally heals and replaces itself. If scabbing occurs, the skin will shed and heal as part of the normal healing process.
Does it cause wrinkles? No, and it can actually have the opposite effect. Electrolysis is somewhat similar to micro-needling: a tiny probe enters the follicle and gently encourages your body to produce collagen, which is what keeps skin firm and smooth. The only way electrolysis could contribute to wrinkles is if a technician is aggressively tugging or pulling at the skin to reach follicles. Repeated rough handling can stress the skin over time. If you are concerned, ask your technician to be gentle. Skilled, careful work keeps your skin safe.
Is it safe during pregnancy? Yes. Electrolysis was invented in the 1800s by a doctor treating an infant patient with a painful ingrown eyelash condition. The current goes directly to the hair follicle and does not travel any deeper, which makes it safe during pregnancy. It is even safe to perform on the breast while a woman is breastfeeding. Because it has been around so long, it has been studied extensively and proven safe for all stages of life, regardless of what medications you take, what creams you use, or what procedures you are undergoing.
Why Electrolysis Is Priced by Time
Because every person's hair is different, the industry standard is to charge by the amount of treatment time provided rather than a flat price per area.
Hair thickness, hair density, how coarse or fine the hairs are, and how they respond all affect how quickly the work can be done. Two clients booking "chin" can need wildly different amounts of time. Charging by time is the only honest way to price it.
Is Electrolysis Worth It?
Electrolysis is a process. It takes commitment, time, and money. But it is an investment with a definite endpoint.
Once the hairs are gone, they are gone forever. There are no touch-ups, no annual maintenance appointments, no gradual regrowth. That is not something any other hair removal method can offer.
